Over the first five days of the Easter break, from Thursday 21st to Tuesday 26th March, 19 students undertook their DofE Silver Award expedition training and assessed expedition in the Brecon Beacons. Despite the challenging conditions faced by the students, each and every student displayed fantastic resilience. DofE leader and Outdoor Education Manager, Isaac Walker, commented, “I am so proud of this group of students, who were excellent ambassadors for the School and displayed amazing perseverance. I am sure that the students will reflect positively on their experience in the coming weeks, months and years. Congratulations on all of your achievements!”
The students visited Llangorse Activity Centre where they spent three days under the supervision of Lupine Adventures, specialist trainers in the preparation for expeditions in the beautiful Welsh countryside. Lupine Adventure are a not-for-profit organisation who have been running Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expeditions for over 15 years, and also worked with Leighton Park School in 2023.
After a day of training, one night of the practice expedition was spent under canvas whilst the other in the relative luxury of a local hostel with access to a shop and hot showers. Once the real expedition was underway though the luxuries were far more limited!
“I really enjoyed the Silver DofE,” commented Maiya (Year 10), “It was incredibly cold, difficult and the days were long but overall I made memories I’ll never forget and I learnt so many new things.” “I had so much fun on DofE.” Added Eva, “ It was such a great experience and although it was hard at times it was so rewarding. It was so fun to spend time with my friends and doing something outside of my comfort zone.”
