Launch of National Careers Week 2025

Leighton Park School has kicked off this week with the national initiative ‘National Careers Week’, encouraging students to look beyond their current academic studies and look towards opportunities of the future. Leighton Park is committed to providing our students with the tools, resources, and guidance needed to navigate an ever-changing job market, ensuring they are ready for success in their future careers.

Led by Sally Saunders, Assistant Head: Pupil Personal Development and Careers Lead, the week emphasises the importance of adaptability and foresight in career planning. Sally highlighted in a whole school Collect when launching the week how the job market has changed, stressing the need for students today to be flexible, agile, and open to new skills and career paths.

Leighton Park’s bespoke careers programme spans all year groups, providing targeted support to ensure students are prepared for the next steps in their academic and professional journeys:

  • Years 7 and 8 focus on exploring a wide range of career opportunities to broaden their horizons.
  • Year 9 helps students understand how specific careers align with their GCSE options.
  • Years 10 and 11 are centred around practical skills such as crafting CVs, job applications, and preparing for interviews, including support with their Morrisby assessments.
  • Year 11 focuses on Sixth Form applications, guiding students as they prepare for the next stage of their education.
  • Sixth Formers are offered detailed guidance on apprenticeships, degree courses, and international education applications, with 1:1 sessions available for tailored support.

The School’s co-curricular programme also plays a pivotal role during supporting students for the future, encouraging the development of diverse skills that employers highly value. Students are able to explore areas beyond the classroom, discovering new hobbies and potential career paths they may not have previously considered.

In addition to our extensive co-curricular programme, trips and extracurricular experiences at Leighton Park School play a vital role in shaping students’ career understanding and development. These trips offer valuable opportunities to discover real-life careers in action, providing students with firsthand insights into various professions. During this National Careers Week, students will attend performances of ‘Matilda’ andThe Phantom of the Opera’, spotlighting the importance of the Arts within our STEAM education framework. Lower Sixth students will visit a careers fair at Green Park in Reading (photos here), where they can explore creative career options, network with industry professionals, and gain a deeper understanding of potential career paths. Additionally, our Female Lead Society will have the exciting opportunity to visit Amazon HQ, empowering them to envision future leadership roles in the tech industry. These experiences contribute significantly to broadening students’ perspectives and helping them make informed decisions about their future careers.

Recent successes include a number of further education offers in Music related courses, as well as apprenticeship applications and offers. Rhys (Upper Sixth) has recently secured an accountancy apprenticeship with Grant Thornton, while Kemianna (Upper Sixth) is in the final stages of interviews for a BBC Journalism apprenticeship. Other Sixth Form apprenticeship highlights include Olivia and Carys, who are currently navigating their exciting interview processes for accountancy and business roles.

We eagerly anticipate hearing about our university offers in the Summer term as results are released. You can read more about our 2024 A Level results and students’ destinations here.

National Careers Week at Leighton Park demonstrates the commitment to providing our students with the tools, resources, and guidance needed to navigate an ever-changing job market, ensuring they are ready for success in their future careers.
