In Friday’s Collect, Amicus welcomed Laura Windisch from Reading Family Aid to help them launch the Toys and Teens Appeal for 2021; a Christmas campaign run by the charity and supported by the School for the past three consecutive years.
The toys received by Reading Charity Aid are gifted to some of the town’s most disadvantaged children and teenagers including those who are victims of poverty, chronic illness, disability, abuse or neglect. Nevertheless, the slogan of Reading Family Aid is ‘Putting smiles on children’s faces’, a motive the School couldn’t get more behind.
Speaking to students in Main Hall, Laura explained, “We recruit volunteers locally to help with the packing and sorting and it usually takes us about a week to choose, sort, pack and deliver all of the toys we collect.”
She continued “This appeal makes a huge difference to families and it all starts with you and your generous donations. I really hope that you will be inspired to donate toys, presents and gifts for children, and I really look forward to hearing about how the collection goes for Leighton Park. Thank you.”
Amicus member, Tia, commented “Reading Family Aid does such important work around this time of year and it is great to see the whole school getting involved with bringing in toys or donating money on our Mufti Day on Friday. I, for one, can’t wait to see what we as a school are capable of doing to support this charity and help our local community in a way that will bring smiles to many children’s faces.”
Amicus leader, Pablo Gorostidi Perez, enthused “In 2018, we collected 300 toys for the cause, last year, we donated more than £1,200, this year we hope to make our contribution even greater.”
Pablo continued, “It is extremely important to Amicus to put ACTION into the Quaker values, shared by all of us. We would like the whole LP community to be involved, not only students but also teachers, parents, guardians, gardeners, etc. The money raised on Friday 3rd December, as part of our Mufti Day will also be mainly dedicated to support Reading Family Aid.”
Donations are being accepted until Monday 6th December and can be dropped off in the Old School Reception.
