Leighton Park LEGO Creators enjoyed venturing to Bristol on Thursday 16th January where they put their collectively constructed robot through a series of challenging tests at the annual LEGO robotics competition.
The competition which is hosted at the HP Labs, involves teams of students from schools across the country building and coding with LEGO robotics EV3 kits. The kits are not merely just LEGO bricks however, as they include programmable computers and control motors that can collect sensor feedback using the software that comes with the set. With these kits, our LEGO Creators have developed critical thinking, collaboration and communication skills in a fun and vibrant way through STEM.
During December 2018 and January 2019 tournaments were held around the UK and Ireland with the final taking place next month on 17th February. The idea behind the competition involves engaging students with STEM through working to design solutions for real world problems by building mission solving robots (made from LEGO). At the competition, contestants put their robots through a series of challenges based around the theme of ‘Into Orbit’, where they task their robots with breaking out of their “earthly constraints”. Amongst the Lego shenanigans there was also lively dancing and balloon fancy dress competitions – A great day out that’s for sure!
“The trip to the LEGO robotics competition was a great way of learning a lot of things and especially realising new things that you didn’t know could be created. The robot our team made had to complete a course by putting different codes into the robot. My favourite things about the LEGO robotics club at school is working with your teammates and create exciting things.” commented Arturo (Year 8).
