London Art Galleries Adventure

On Monday 3rd March our GCSE and Sixth Form artists headed to London for a day of inspirational gallery exploration. With the ‘Flora in Contemporary Art and Culture’ at the Saatchi Gallery offering an exhibition that spans the worlds of fashion, photography, graphics, painting and mechanised sculpture the students were presented with an excellent contrast with the more traditional collections in the V&A. They were also lucky with the brilliant weather and enjoyed the opportunity to spend some time at the Albert Memorial in Kensington Gardens admiring the architecture of the Royal Albert Hall in the sunshine.

Head of Art, Mark Wood, explained “The trip serves to inspire different students in different ways depending on their individual artistic journey. Many of the Year 11 GCSE students have opted for the theme of Flora and Fauna from this year’s exam and the Saatchi Gallery certainly didn’t disappoint; it is certainly a vivid source of inspiration. The A Level and IB students are all interpreting themes of their own, including a focus on travel, networks and collections. To this end the V & A is overflowing with sources to work from. For the IB students this is also an important time to see and take influence from the ways in which an exhibition is curated and themed which forms part of their course. Some students have chosen to focus on themes of ‘Human Being ‘, ‘Landmarks’ or ‘Remnants’ which will take in some of the ancient casts at the V a& A, as well as the iconic memorials next to the museum, including the Royal Albert Hall.

The Saatchi Gallery presents curated exhibitions on themes relevant and exciting in the context of contemporary creative culture. Their educational programmes aim to reveal the possibilities of artistic expression to young minds, encourage fresh thought and stimulate innovation. The Victoria and Albert Museum in London is the world’s largest museum of applied arts, decorative arts and design, while the Royal Albert Hall was created after the success of the Great Exhibition in 1851, looked on by its organiser.

Art is an essential component of Leighton Park’s STEAM education which brings together the logic of the sciences and creative habits of mind from the arts to deliver the effective development of skills in critical thinking, problem-solving, initiative and teamwork. By integrating STEAM into our curriculum, we are not only enhancing academic learning but also nurturing the innovators, thinkers, and leaders of tomorrow.
