Leighton Park’s Lower Sixth students took an exciting step into the world of independent research this week, as they were introduced to the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) and the IB Extended Essay. The session, designed to inspire and prepare students for these enriching academic opportunities, highlighted the value of pursuing projects driven by their own passions and interests.
Claire Gulliver, EPQ Coordinator, led the session with an engaging overview of the EPQ, explaining the program’s flexibility and its focus on student-led enquiry. “The beauty of the EPQ is that it allows you to to dive explore something that you are passionate about,” she shared. “From environmental issues to creative projects, the possibilities are endless.”
To spark inspiration, Claire showcased an array of essay titles and artefacts from previous years. Essay title examples included: ‘How close have we come to to treating/finding a cure for prion diseases?’, ‘Air traffic management, Will the UK’s TMA cope with increasing demand?’. With artefact examples such as: ‘Writing and recording podcasts’ and ‘Design and create a flat pack chair that can be easily manufactured’. These examples demonstrated the program’s vast potential to cater to diverse interests.
The Library team also contributed to the session, offering practical advice on finding reliable resources and the importance of accurate referencing. Their tips and strategies equipped students with essential tools for conducting thorough and credible research—a crucial skill for both the EPQ and the IB Extended Essay.
Students left the session buzzing with ideas, ready to embrace the challenge of shaping their own research journeys. The opportunities to develop critical thinking, time management, and in-depth knowledge promise to enrich their academic and personal growth.
