Lower Sixth Living Adventurously: PGL Weekend

On Friday 12th September, intrepid Lower Sixth students swapped classrooms for canoes and textbooks for team challenges as they set off for an adventure-packed weekend at Little Canada. The PGL activity centre on the Isle of Wight allowed both continuing LP students and newcomers to bond as they began their Sixth Form journey together.

The journey across the Solent was a little choppy (and a little damp!), but spirits were high. After a quick site tour and a hearty tea, students threw themselves into the first big event of the weekend: a giant game of ambush.

Saturday morning started with rain, but that didn’t stop the fun. Indoors, students tried their hands at fencing (many relishing the chance to duel with Maths teacher Mark Budge and Director of the IB Kees Luteijn) or diving into an adrenaline-fuelled session of archery tag. By midday, the skies cleared and it was time for the real thrill-seekers to test their nerves on the vertical challenge and the giant swing.

The afternoon brought kayaking on the Solent where, as expected, staying dry proved impossible. Still, students threw themselves into it with gusto. “My favourite parts of the trip were the journey, the canoeing and the climbing,” said Harrell. “The climbing was out of my comfort zone, but the friendly staff pushed me to go further and push my limits.”

Evenings were just as lively, with dodgeball, basketball and plenty of social time giving students the chance to strengthen new friendships. “The trip was amazing,” Taylor shared. “It made us all come together as a group, made some very good friends and enjoyed the outdoor activities together!”

Sunday morning saw one last round of activities before the group departed from Ryde Pier, tired but full of stories to share. Whether it was climbing a little higher, paddling further out in a kayak, or simply meeting new people, every student had the chance to challenge themselves and discover something new with friends.

Art teacher Mark Wood summed up the weekend: “It’s been just fantastic seeing students truly living adventurously, forming friendships and getting out of their comfort zones, starting the new term with zest and vigour. Through wind, rain and shine, the PGL adventure weekend is such a great time for everyone to try something new and celebrate the great British outdoors.”
