At the end of the Spring Term the Upper Sixth PE CTECH student enthusiastically launched their next fitness challenge for students, staff and parents. LP Run in the Sun follows on from the Spring Term’s High Five Week, when members of the community ran a variety of short jogs, fast sprints, interval training and distance races, culminating in at least three members completing a half marathon! The Summer Term challenge is a fun competition between each of the Houses, staff, parents and Old Leightonians to see who can collectively complete the most kilometres over the nine weeks of the term.
There are six teams who will be competing from Monday 26th April to Sunday 27th June with the aim of getting out and running, walking, cycling, rowing or swimming as far as possible. It’s not about speed; more about taking part. The CTECH group have created a series of shared Google sheets to enable participants to record their evidence. Cycling kilometers are halved – just to make sure that there is a maths work out alongside the physical ones!
Organiser, Ellie (Upper Sixth), reflected, “After the LP high five week went well we wanted to continue raising money for young minds and encouraging more people to exercise.” Fellow CTECH student, Tabby, added, “The first week has been a good positive start, with the staff currently taking the lead. We’re hoping to encourage more people to participate this week to try catch up with the staff’s km.”
A weekly infographic will track each teams progress and all proceeds from fundraising will be donated to Young Minds, a mental health charity working with young people whom the CTECH group have also previously supported. If you would like to make a donation please see the young minds LP just giving page
Jez Belas, Director of Sport, PE and Wellness commented, “I’m over the moon that our CTECH group have come up with yet another great idea to promote physical activity and positive mental health in our wider community. Adding in the competition element is great and makes me want to get stuck in! Through their work in the Sport & Physical Activity course with us, these students are now excellent leaders and organisers of sports and sporting events. They have clearly defined roles and work superbly well as a team. Exercise brings us all together whether it’s playing sport in teams or running alone. Today I ran with my son for this initiative. It strengthens bonds between people and makes us feel better about ourselves. All this is so important as we come out of the weirdest year of our lives.”
