Three of our Lower Sixth mathematicians, Lilia, Saarvi and Diana, welcomed pupils from Katesgrove Primary School on Tuesday 16th January for the second of six workshops that the Leighton Park Mathematics Department will conduct this year for our primary schools’ outreach programme. The session focussed on shapes and their manipulation prompting the visiting children to learn visually and discover some fun methods of developing their maths skills.
Lilia explained: “We discussed the topic of calculating different areas of shapes such as a triangle or a trapezoid. This was the foundation knowledge that we wanted to cover with them to challenge them at the end by trying to apply their previously gained knowledge to calculating different areas of shapes they perhaps have never seen before or would have at least struggled with calculating without a formula. However, I think the actual process of using multiple formulae for determining the area of one unknown shape enabled them to come up with their own formula, which was similar to the actual. This was also one of the most enjoyable parts for the students and for me since they learned to apply their knowledge differently.”
Leni Samuel, Head of Maths, commented, “The Royal Institute of Mathematics (Ri) Masterclasses are a unique opportunity for our Lower Sixth Mathematicians to create a hands-on enriching lesson exploring Maths beyond the curriculum. It’s been a pleasure watching our students hone their leadership skills whilst deepening their own understanding of the mathematical concepts through well planned and well delivered sessions.”
