Our Sixth Form Mathematicians have stepped up to inspire Year 6 primary school pupils with a love of learning for this core subject. Working within the Royal Institution’s framework, the A level students have been delivering maths on a fortnightly basis to a group from Katesgrove Primary School.
Will Maxwell, Leighton Park’s Second in Department (Mathematics), “It’s a really good opportunity for the Sixth Formers who are doing mathematics. It’s not necessarily lesson based, it’s something that they personally find enjoyable about the subject or something unusual, something to spark their creativity and spark a love for Mathematics. Without me really selling it, the Sixth Formers jumped at the chance to plan a lesson. I have done very minimal overseeing because they have taken full responsibility for it. They came up with all the slides and the worksheets themselves, they asked me for a few hints and help, but they have done all the hard work and they’ve put it all together brilliantly.”
Liv (Lower Sixth) “I just think it’s really cool to inspire a new generation of people who love maths. It’ll be great for their future and to inspire them to find it interesting is really nice.”
Maira (Year 6) who has visited every two weeks on a Friday for the last five sessions enthused,“It’s very lovely! I love it; I love drawing and sketching. I’ve learned how to colour by calculation today, about the golden ratio and the Fibonacci Sequence.”
Mr Koeries, the group’s accompanying teacher concluded, “They are learning something that they haven’t learned before. It’s going to prep them for their sets. We’ve got a lot of students here today who are high achievers and it’s going to push them that little bit further and it’s going to prepare them for secondary school as well.”
