Microsoft DigiGirlz

On Tuesday 20th November eight of our Year 8 girls were excited to take part in the national Microsoft DigiGirlz event at Microsoft’s UK Headquarters in Reading.

The girls got involved in a STEM challenge where they able to exepreince Computing beyond the classroom as they represented the School and engaged in the latest sophisticated technologies as they competed in an innovation project.

The girls observed demonstrations, took part in hands-on experiments and learnt about tech careers and pathways through presentations from Microsoft staff.

“I really enjoyed going to Microsoft for Digigirlz; there were lots of talks about technology which were interesting and I loved getting to create something – that was the best bit! We were challenged to make a device that would help someone with a disability. We made a lanyard that would help someone with a stutter to communicate and another group made a watch that would help someone with anxiety to relax through music and calm messages. And we got a very cool Digigirlz t-shirt that I absolutely love!” explained Harriet.

The girls listened to three talks which involved a Q&A session from three university graduates that are on the Microsoft graduate programme, a talk from the CEO of Microsoft that discussed women inventors and the need to have more women working in STEM, and an enlightening talk about the advancement of technology and how another big boom in technology is on the horizon.

“Going to DigiGirlz was great. It was so much fun to see so many other girls there that are interested in going into STEM careers.” commented Felicity.

“It was interesting learning that only 12% of women go into STEM related careers.” revealed Laurel.

“I enjoyed learning about AI technology and how different objects can have a different purpose.” added Jocelyn.
