Music Tour 2024: Tuscany!

Music students set off to Italy on a fabulous Music Tour from the 4th to the 11th of July.

With first stop as touchdown in Pisa, rehearsals started imminently the next morning before exploring Montecatini. After a fabulous lunch and rehearsals, the tour took an excursion to the funiculaire to take in the outstanding views.

The next day started leisurely with some time spent cooling off in the pool and shopping under the beautiful Italian sun. Later, the students headed to their first concert venue, which boasted stunning views of Italy. Buzzing with excitement, they performed in Crespina Lorenzana, where the Orchestra and Choir presented four pieces each, along with duets, solos, and a quartet.

Lucca was the next stop, where the group toured Puccini’s House and other parts of the city on Sunday afternoon. The second concert took place at Polo Culturale Artemisia in Capannori, featuring more orchestral pieces, solos, and a wind performance of ABBA hits, dazzling the audience.

Monday provided a break from concerts, allowing the students to explore Bologna with a guided tour. On Tuesday, they immersed themselves in Florentine culture with a boat tour and a visit to the Uffizi Gallery, admiring masterpieces like ‘The Birth of Venus’. They also visited other landmarks such as museums, the Duomo, and Ponte Vecchio. The day concluded with set up and a soundcheck from the wonderful crew on board; for another fabulous concert taking place in Empoli, Chiostro degli Agostiniani.

Wednesday offered a slower pace, with another refreshing dip in the pool. The final concert was held in Pescia, but not before a visit to Lerici Castle, a gem of medieval art, and the picturesque pebble beach below. After lunch, the group travelled to Pescia for their soundcheck and final performance at Piazza del Grano.  Back onto the bus to travel to the next concert venue, soundchecks were completed again ready for a phenomenal last concert in Pescia, Piazza del Grano. The final concert brought an array of music, featuring ‘Miss Saigon’ from the Orchestra, a Brass performance and the Senior Choir performing ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ just to name a few. To top off the trip, the Mayor of Pescia congratulated the students on their musical performance and spoke passionately of how wonderful their performance was.

The tour was a fabulous experience for our students with musical passions, whether that be playing an instrument, singing or managing the technical setup. With a ‘music for all’ approach at Leighton Park, it is always a delight to allow these opportunities for everybody to engage in enriching educational and creative experiences.
