Paracetamol Production and Competitive Nylon!

Four Year 9 of our students took part in Salter’s Festival of Chemistry at Oxford University on Thursday 21st March alongside peers from across the county in a nationwide science experience.

The Salter’s Festivals of Chemistry for eleven to thirteen year olds include two practical challenges and a fun lecture with prizes and certificates for all involved. Approximately 50 events are held annually, at around 40 different venues across the UK and Ireland, with around 800 schools taking part each year. In total over 46,000 students have experienced the fun of practical chemistry through their Festivals of Chemistry and it is an established event in the Leighton Park School calendar for our Year 9s.

On Thursday, the day started with an engaging practical for students learning how to produce paracetamol and purifying it using vacuum filtration and recrystallisation, finally testing it using a thin layer of chromatography.

This was followed by a competition for the group to make the longest possible strand of Nylon Polymer. The Leighton Park group reached a total of twelve and a half metres!

“This was an excellent opportunity for our students to experience university life and be exposed to the facilities at Oxford University which includes their brand new labs.” Commented Head of Chemistry, Adam Ball.
