Philosophy Bites

The Beliefs and Values Department presented us with a delightful evening on Thursday 28th March in our newly opened Michael Malnick Centre.

The evening started with live music from pianist and Music Scholar, Emily, as parents and student arrived. We were privileged to welcome Matt Winkless from Kings College London and Christopher Kimbell who is currently studying for a PhD Music with philosophical elements. They provided the key note address which asked ’what is Philosophy? What does it mean to do Philosophy?’ This provided students with a chance to think deeper, as future philosophers, and as those currently studying the subject. Edward Corbett of Bristol University’s Young Philosophers Society examined the significance of Philosophy in today’s world from the perspective of current and former students. The evening ended with a celebration of outstanding student achievement from Lizzie, a student in Year 8, who read her Philosophy essay to an impressed audience. A keen listener commented “We were blown away by all the participants, and thought Lizzie delivered her essay with poise and maturity.”

The event is due to continue after a successful launch, with a talk from Alex Powlesland, PhD Biochemistry, Imperial College London who will question ‘to what extent does funding limit knowledge in the natural sciences?’ on Monday 10th June and an autumn event on Philosophy and Political Thought to look forward to as well.
