Quaker Schools’ Peace Conference

Throughout March and April, three of our Year 9 pupils have been attending a series of consultations on the question of, ‘What is the relevance of Peace Education in today’s world?’ alongside fellow Quaker schools Ackworth, Bootham, Sidcot, and Mount School York.

The conference gave Anna, Eliza, and Leander each the opportunity to engage with the question by listening to expert testimony, discussing in small groups, and then presenting their findings to the entire group – all of which is to contribute to the exciting development of a brand-new Peace Education curriculum!

Ryan Maze, teacher of Philosophy, Religious Studies, and Values commented after the final session, “Speaking for myself, I can say wholeheartedly that it was a pleasure and a privilege to be involved in the conference. The peace conference was engaging, informative, and professional and I believe the pupils were able to learn a lot from it. By the end of the conference, it was clear that the relevance of Peace Education in today’s world cannot be overstated and, therefore, I very much look forward to seeing our pupils’ excellent contributions reflected in the new curriculum.”

The Peace Pole which is visible from many areas of the Park is a perpetual reminder to all members of our community of the importance of Peace as they go about their daily lives. This photograph of the Peace Pole was taken by Harry, Lower Sixth. The pole was carved from a fallen oak already on the Park for the School’s 125th birthday celebrations in 2015.
