Today, Year 7 joined Jamie Cullum alongside 2,281 other ambitious individuals and schools, to record the largest music lesson ever held in support of Age UK. As they gathered in the Foyer of the MMC, students were eager to learn from the accomplished musical director, all whilst taking part in a Guinness World Record attempt.
During the virtual lesson, Year 7 played the classic carol ‘In the Bleak Midwinter’ on the piano and their orchestral instruments. “I really enjoyed the improvising and I learnt how to play the tune.” commented Romy. “I learnt how to play the melody and everyone enjoyed it.” added Josh.
After graduating from neighbouring University of Reading, the musician and radio host went on to release his best-selling album. He has since achieved great accolades in the industry for his jazz compositions that are heavily influenced by contemporary popular music. In September, Jamie earned an Ivor Novello Award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically; the track ‘The Age of Anxiety’ was inspired by his friendship with Amy Winehouse. The strapline for his new album ‘Bringing People Together through Music’, is a motive that strongly resonates with our Music Department.
Lara Rawlings, Music teacher, commented “It has been an inspiring afternoon, and everyone got something from the lesson because it was inclusive for all levels and instruments. It was wonderful to feel united with other people around the globe, creating a sense of togetherness through music during this time.”
“Before the outbreak of coronavirus, we were already facing a loneliness epidemic amongst older people. But as a result of the pandemic, this crisis has intensified. Age UK are working hard to relieve the isolation and despair felt by so many, but this Christmas could be the loneliest yet for the older people most in need.” Jamie states on his website.
The School was delighted to take part in a cause that would not only benefit students but the people whom Age UK support. As partners with both the Berkshire and the Reading branches of Age UK, over lockdown students, staff and families shared care packages with the charity for those who were most vulnerable. More recently, Year 9 students have enthusiastically penned personal Christmas cards to be delivered to those suffering from isolation this December.
