Recycle your Crisp Packets with Fryer Eco Club

Dedicated to driving climate action, Fryer Eco Club’s latest project is championing the work of innovative company TerraCycle; a global leader in reprocessing hard-to-recycle materials.

In a bid to ensure no crisp packet needlessly goes to landfill, the group have installed seven recycling points around the Park, devoted to collecting everyone’s empties. These will then be taken to our local Crisp Packet Recycling Scheme, drop-off location.

Jo Toovey, Fryer Eco Club Leader, remarked “The Fryer Eco Club students have been very excited about making an impact on our recycling around the Park. One of the first things they identified as a way that we can all get involved is to recycle items that can’t be recycled normally. A great example of this is crisp packets. Around 6 billion packets of crisps are eaten each year in the UK, equating to more than 16 million of them being thrown away every day.

She continued “The reaction from staff with our pilot box has been fabulous, with a full box of empty crisp packets after one week. We hope that students and staff will help with our project and put their empty packets from school and home into the boxes. In the short term, we can decrease the amount of waste we produce as individuals and as a school. In the long-term, when we recycle, we also earn points with the company Terracycle, which can be converted into money for charity. It’s a win-win!

We are carrying on our theme of recycling and sustainability with the Year 7 and 9 sustainability days in the week starting 21st June. Included in the activities, students will get the opportunity to design a bin which can aid the recycling of multiple types of waste across the School. The winning design will be presented to Matthew Judd, Head, with a view to being turned into reality as part of the School’s pledge to be more sustainable. It’s exciting times, and it’s great to be a part of the student’s grand plans to support recycling, sustainability, and local charities.”

Across the UK there are 3,763 sites taking on the scheme, in association with Walkers, putting us in good company. However, Fryer Eco Club have ambitious plans to make more recycling initiatives central to the School in the near future.

Leighton Park’s crisp packet recycling points are; Peckover Hall, Grove Foyer, MMC Foyer, the Staff Common Room and all Senior Houses. If you would like more information on the project, please see the video from Fryer Eco Club.
