The Return of Girls’ Football!

Congratulations to our Fryer Girls Football team on their first Football fixture of the year. Our huge team of enthusiastic players played with determination and skill and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the game. Captain of the team, Isabella (Year 8) commented “I love girls’ football as it gives me a chance to play with my friends and play a sport that I love. I’m so glad that Leighton Park has started girls’ football again as I feel it’s a better way to practice and learn. For future matches, I’m hoping we can win but most importantly create a strong team full of enthusiastic players. Football means a lot to me in and out of school so the fact that I can showcase my love for it at school makes me excited for future matches and events”. The team showed some incredible team morale and supported one another continuously. Although not a win, the team were still in good spirit after their first game together and are ready to tackle their upcoming training and next game. Player, Alex (Year 8) shared her thoughts on football at Leighton Park, expressing “I love girl’s football at Leighton Park because it gives us a wider range of sports to do, it is also a new experience for most of us. I am also really excited for future matches because now we have more experience as a new team”.

LP currently have 23 girls in our Fryer team, with it just being the third week of our new year and we have no doubt the interest in girls’ football will grow even further. Our 23 girls faced The Abbey and their team of 9, resulting in our team having to play on rotation of two teams of 9 aside (with subs) due to our huge girls’ team and interest! We are so pleased to be able to promote our incredible girls sport engrossment and with this being the first Girls Football fixture in a couple of years, this spike in interest is an incredible development to be able to support here at Leighton Park. Head of Football, Callum Beasley, stated “I am extremely proud to be a part of the return of girl’s football here at Leighton Park. This is not only just a start, but also the start of special journey with Girl’s Football. The enthusiasm and dedication displayed by our players are the seeds of a growing future for the sport within our school and community. I am excited to see the girls develop in the coming years!”

The team will continue to train and develop their skills, ready for their next game where we hope to see a win in their National Cup!
