School House 24-Hour Cyclathon for Launchpad

As Cricket Week and #LPGirlsCan drew to a close on Friday 11th June, School House prepared to take on a 24-hour cyclathon; not yet ready to hang up their sports kit! The challenge, in aid of local organisation, Launchpad Reading, raised a phenomenal £1,357.93.

Starting at 6.00pm, 30 boys from across Berkshire participated in their homes and gyms, whilst on the Park, boarding students began to cycle from an exercise bike stationed in the hub of School House.

With a roof over their head, the group reflected on the work that Launchpad do to support individuals, couples and families who don’t have a stable place to live or are at risk of losing their home.

“Thank you to everyone who took part in the cyclathon, that money will go directly towards helping people in need.” commented Kate Martin, Fundraising Manager for Launchpad.

Housemaster, Alex Leighton, remarked “All of the boys demonstrated tremendous commitment to the cyclathon, helping each other to remain motivated throughout the night! The seniors and prefects, in particular, were instrumental in keeping everyone going and there was a spirit of teamwork where people volunteered to take shifts for those who struggled.”

One student who covered a number of slots during the difficult early hours and almost made it the entire duration without sleep was James in the Upper Sixth!

Fellow boarder, Spencer, enthused “I’m so proud of the House’s effort, especially of how much money we raised! Launchpad is a ‘wheely’ good cause and we had a great time fundraising for them.”

Aside from the worthwhile funds and awareness raised for those in need, Alex spoke about the value of the cyclathon to the House “It helped for us to bond and gave us an opportunity to show tolerance and patience with each other. The most memorable moment was definitely the period of roughly one hour when we furiously cycled, whilst listening to meme songs from several years ago, which was both hilarious and irritating.”
