Generous Year 10 students and their families have been filling shoeboxes with toys and games for children displaced by the crisis in Ukraine this week. Parent, Alison Green, approached Tash Coccia, Senior Assistant Head: Partnerships and Outreach, with a suggestion of involving the school community in humanitarian aid, and the Leighton Park community have been eager to support the initiative.
Alison’s local contacts have made her aware of a minibus leaving Twyford for Poland with space on board to carry 50 shoeboxes from each of four schools. The shoeboxes needed to be filled with treats and toys for children who have had to flee their homes in the wake of the Russian attacks. The minibus will carry the boxes to Poland where many refugees from neighbouring Ukraine are currently in desperate need.
Following appeals on the Year 10 WhatsApp group and the school’s weekly eBulletin, the boxes were dropped off in their cheerful wrapping and clear labels on Friday 18th March at Grove.
Alison commented, “Over 500 shoeboxes for smiles are on their way to Poland to children displaced due to this conflict, including Year 10s’ contribution of colourful shoeboxes filled with toys, pens and paper and bathroom essentials. LP doing what it does best; helping communities near and far. Thank you Year 10!”
Tash added, “It was so moving taking the shoeboxes from the Y10s to the drop off in Twyford before the departure to Folkstone. The time and effort that has gone into the gifts and wrapping was quite beautiful and brought home how important these acts of kindness are so important. The organiser invited us to see how our school contribution had added to the overwhelming generosity of the community. We look forward to doing more when the next appeal is launched.”
