Soloists’ Star in Concert Success!

The Soloists’ Concert on Wednesday 8th November provided a delightful musical extravaganza to kick off the second half of the Autumn term to the LP community. The audience gathered in Main Hall to hear 26 individual pieces with musical items ranging from classical to pop. As the listeners enjoyed everything from ‘Shout!’ by Rob Wiffin on the trombone, which is an exhilarating Latin jazz piece for solo trombone covering much of the range and expressive power of the instrument to Mozart’s beautiful Agnus Dei and from Radiohead to Bach, the wide-ranging programme kept them alert to the variety of instruments our talented students can play as well as their different tastes in musical genres.

There were pieces on the piano, voice, guitar, cello, clarinet, violin, oboe, saxophone and trombone as students from Year 8 and above demonstrated their musical skills. Many of those on stage are also Music Scholars and are involved in a significant number of musical co-curricular activities as well as peripatetic lessons. Over 60% of our students learn at least one musical instrument.

We are proud to be the only school in Europe to be a Yamaha Music Education Partner as well as holding relationships with Sontronics and Steinberg, for whom we are a Certified Training Centre.

Director of Music and Media, Rosemary Scales, commented: “The diversity and range of the music our students chose to perform was absolutely wonderful. I never ceased to be impressed by the enthusiasm of our students who are always willing to perform – our soloists are some of our bravest performers. I was particularly delighted to see a number of students who are new this term to Leighton Park feeling confident enough to perform this evening.”
