On Friday 17th May, Year 9 and Year 10 students represented Leighton Park in the annual Reading Town Athletics Championships at Palmer Park. With Year 9s competing in the U15 category and Year 10s in the U17s, there were some fantastic individual and team track and field performances.
In the U15s Boys’ competition, George (Year 9) clinched a silver medal in the 800 metres and Laurie (Year 9) achieved a bronze in the discus, securing a 5th place overall finish for the boys. The U15 Girls’ competition saw Mia (Year 9) win the first LP gold medal of the day in the 100 metre sprint.
Next up, the U17 Boys’ competition; Youssef (Year 10) won gold in the 400 metres, as well as Harry (Year 10) similarly clinching gold in the high jump. Congratulations must also go to Joseph (Year 10), who won a bronze in the discus. These achievements ran the boys into a remarkable 3rd place overall.
Success didn’t stop there! The U17s Girls’ competition brought Alice (Year 10) gold in the high jump, Eva (Year 10) silver in the long jump and Julia (Year 10) a bronze medal in the 200 metres.
Students wait in anticipation as they find out this week if they are to progress to the next round of the competition, which will see them represent Reading (and LP) in the Berkshire County Championships on Saturday 8th June. Director of Sport, Simon Bradbury, said: ‘It was great to see so many students taking part in the Town Championships and putting in some excellent performances that will see some of them go on to represent Reading at the next stage of the competition. A big well done to all those students who were involved.’
