Sports Success Summer 2023

Leighton Park competed in over 50 fixtures this term with Cricket, tennis, athletics, rounders, hockey and rugby 7s all featuring in our fixture calendar.

Our Sports Leaders were active, supporting local primary schools and hosting the first ever Independent Schools Association Inclusive Sports Festival. Our Advanced Performer Programme (APP) athletes enjoyed their trip to Move HQ for elite level sports training and performance analysis to help shape their personal targets for the coming year. APP students then also enjoyed a trip to Wimbledon.

Our wonderful LP Girls Can week, once again offered amazing opportunities for sport, reflection and achievement, including Collects from paralympic swimmer and gold medal winning multi-Olympian Stephanie Millward MBE as well as OL and GB Bobsleigher Fabby. Our Cricket Week saw our girls and boys perform against top teams, as well as enjoy community matches against the OLs and The Forty Club.  Our U13 and U15 girls had particularly successful seasons, reaching the county finals, with the U15 boys also reaching the County Cup semi final.

Students also represented their Houses in the rugby, tennis and athletics competitions this term. The Richard Coleman Shield was awarded to Cadbury House this year, following a strong showing across all the sports competitions, with Tubman hot on their heals.

Our students enjoyed athletics successes across multiple competitions, including the Reading Town Athletics competition, the Berkshire Schools Combined Events Championships and the Berkshire County Championships, where Mia, Iris, Youssef, Charlie, Joseph, Jacob and Ted were all selected to represent Reading. Special mentions must go to Mia in Year 8, who won the Berkshire Schools Combined Events Championships, and Youssef in Year 9, who represented Berkshire at the English Schools Athletics Championships in the 300 metres as is now in the top 20 in England.

Tennis proved again to be a very popular activity with students and there were some fantastic matches with Pangbourne, Oratory, Shiplake and Crosfields.

It is wonderful to see two of our students really excelling at their rowing. Zak is following his dreams and is now on the Olympic Pathway for Rowing, while Jemima has shone in the J15 category, winning several competitions as part of a 4 and an 8 with Henley Rowing Club.  Jemima has recently found out that her team has gained the qualifying time to make the GB U16 category to compete against France in July.
