Celebrating Valentine’s around the Park, Leighton Park’s charity club, AMICUS, partnered with Social Enterprises to offer roses, cards and chocolates throughout the school community before half-term. Students and staff purchased these tokens to share with loved ones, in friendship and kindness, contributing a small donation. All proceeds have supported the CATARACTS appeal in Africa with the charity Fundación Allegro.
Fundación Allegro operates a variety of projects in Africa including agricultural initiatives to improve drainage and irrigation as well as a health and wellbeing focus which helps Ethiopian citizens suffering from cataracts. In Ethiopia, the loss of eyesight can result in the inability to work which in turn can lead to issues of poverty, homelessness, social isolation and psychological problems.
Across lunchtime on Wednesday 7th of February, AMICUS members eagerly delivered the tokens of appreciation to those nominated by the buyers. Joyous faces and screams of excitement filled Oakview as the spirit of friendship filled the atmosphere.
We are proud to inspire students to make a meaningful impact on charities near and far. Head of AMICUS, Pablo Gorostidi, commented: “It’s heartening to witness our students taking ownership of such initiatives and demonstrating a genuine passion for helping communities in need”. Our Quaker Values lie at the core of our school, and seeing them reflected in actions like this is truly humbling.
