Springtime Sporting Success!

The Spring Term has been a whirlwind for Sport with almost 150 fixtures and competitions played since our return in January. Rugby, football, hockey, basketball, netball, swimming, and cricket have all featured on the fixture calendar and House Competitions have taken place in football (winners Bentsi-Enchill), swimming (winners Cadbury), rugby, netball, hockey and basketball (all won by Tubman). The overall standings for the end of the Spring Term towards the coveted Richard Coleman Shield are Cadbury 55, Tubman 51, Bentsi-Enchill 49, and Fox 35.

Our Advanced Performance Programme (APP) to support those pursuing elite sportsmanship has been active this term. The APP students and Sports Scholars enjoyed a talk from Sports Psychologist, Dr Emma Kavanagh, Lecturer at Bournemouth University and Team GB coach, to help build their resilience and mental endurance alongside their physical strengths. The group also visited St George’s Park National Football Centre in Burton on Trent where they explored the training regimes and met some of the country’s top coaches. We’ve had some new successes to celebrate with Oscar (Year 10) trialling for the German U15 Cricket Team, Taya (Year 11) attending the Taekwondo European Championships, Jemima (Year 10) starring in the winning squad for Rowing at a national competition and Zeb (Year 11) joining the U16 county badminton team.

Our three Senior football teams finished fourth, third and fourth in their respective leagues with the 2nds unbeaten this season! The Junior teams (U14 and U15) had a variety of results but both showed positive progress as the season progressed. In Netball the U16 team came 3rd in the Bowl at their ISA Competition and the U14 team won the bronze medal at their ISA Competition, both held in Nottingham. The Fryer Rugby U13A team had a successful season winning 4 out of their 5 games with their only defeat coming narrowly against Great Marlow. It was also great to see the B teams involved in touch fixtures against various schools throughout the season and to see the Fryer girls being involved in rugby fixtures with some real talent emerging amongst our younger players. In Basketball the LP team came in 3rd place in the league out of six. The U16 boys hockey team, captained by U16 England Hockey player, Oliver (Year 11) got further in a national hockey competition than any other LP side has done before coming 2nd in the initial county round held at Bradfield College, which included a win against the hosts, a draw against Windsor Boys’ School, and a tough defeat to Eton at the end.

Outreach has also featured in the PE Department diary as we hosted a Hockey Masterclass for four primary schools, a Netball Masterclass for three primary schools plus a Festival of Sport for our Whitley Schools Partnership. Our Sports Leaders Award students have supported Ridgeway Primary School with their KS2 swimming curriculum delivery, providing lessons in our pool on a weekly basis.
