Staff vs. Students Annual Hockey Showdown

On Thursday 21st March, the exhilarating staff versus students annual Hockey match unfolded on the pitch, as both sides geared up with gumshields, shin pads and sticks at the ready.

A crowd of supportive students and enthusiastic parents eagerly gathered as referee Ellie Smales, Geography teacher and Co-Head of Rugby, blew the whistle and let the game commence. The match kicked off with an impressive display from the students, however, the staff came determined and swiftly countered, notching the first goal. Sam Bowers, PE Teacher, celebrated taking the staff into the lead but not long after, Oliver (Lower Sixth) fought back with some great 3D skills, evening the score out to one all.

As the match progressed, spirits remained high. PE and Games Teacher, Paul Bean, reclaimed the lead for the staff at 2-1, only to be matched by Lower Sixth student, Charlotte, who executed a flawless set piece to tie the game once more at 2-2.

In a nail-biting finish, staff emerged victorious for the fifth consecutive year, securing a 3-2 win, with a final goal courtesy of Matt Richards, Head of Hockey, Chemistry teacher and GB Hockey player. Reflecting on the match, Matt commented, “The game was played in amazing spirits. The students put out their most talented side in years, and it was very close throughout the whole game – with notable saves made by the students’ keeper, Liv! It is great to see how far the students have come with their hockey skills and game-play ability. The staff were a bit slow to get going and we had a few who had never played hockey before! Amazing that they came to give it a go. It’s a great way to bring staff and students closer together and to see each other in a different light”.
