A weekly student-led club was launched last term to introduce girls in Years 7 and 8 to STEM careers and inspire their future choices for GCSE, A Level, University and beyond. The three co-founders, Eva, Alice and Daisy, are all committed Year 11 scientists and enjoy their STEM subjects within the curriculum. Their initiative grew out of the girls’ Year 10 Global Perspectives project which focussed on education for all and they were keen to begin by extending their own love of science to Fryer students.
Daisy enthused “We want them to feel that they are able to do it…It is a safe space for them to follow their STEM ambitions. The club is really driven by them and what their interests are so we’ve done veterinary science, volcanologists, food testing.” Eva observed “The girls have really become a lot closer because they all have similar passions.”Alice added “I’d say to any girls, get involved with science, get inspired. Don’t feel scared, there are other strong women, like you, who want to get into science. Just give it a go. You don’t have to love science, not everyone loves science, but you’ll never know if you don’t try.”
