The unveiling of the annual Art Exhibition, this year entitled ‘StrARTa’ took place on Thursday 19th June with a significant number of viewers enjoying the artwork in the Upper Foyer of the MMC prior to the ‘Let’s Dance’ show in the evening.
With the show running until almost the end of term, visitors can take their time to explore interpretations of themes in GCSE and A Level art coursework across a variety of media including photography, sculpture, pottery, textiles, paint, charcoal and more!
Mark Wood, Head of Art, who organised the exhibition with the Art Department team, Katie, Debs and Luke, explained the background to StrARTa’s conception: “It was such a lovely variety of work where the creativity is like layers of all sorts of media and also the look of some of it looked a little bit like rock strata and that notion of looking back through history as well and of course, it’s got the word ‘art’ in, so a little play on words there as well!”
A Level Art student, Lily (Lower Sixth) who has a number of pieces in the show remarked: “Art at Leighton Park is good; there’s a lot of resources, the pottery and the print studio and stuff, so there is a lot more freedom. I like having more than one teacher because you get different perspectives. It’s a good class because it’s small and it’s more personal and I feel like they are really rooting for us all the time. I like the exhibition because I love seeing all my friends’ work. It’s nice to work towards something and have people appreciate it because normally we’re just hidden away; it’s nice that people get to see it.”
