On Wednesday 5th February, Leighton Park School had the privilege of attending the prestigious Jacqueline du Pré Music Building at the University of Oxford, where four of our talented students had reached the final of the ISA Young Musician Competition. This achievement in itself is something to be incredibly proud of.
The event showcased an outstanding level of musical talent, and all four of our finalists performed brilliantly, with three of them placing in the competition.
In the Key Stage 3/Middle category, Reuben’s exceptional bassoon performance earned him the Judges Award, which effectively placed him in 3rd. Meanwhile, Yaya played the piano exceptionally, and was the youngest in the category, with many feeling she truly deserved recognition for her talent.
The Key Stage 4-5/Senior category was nothing short of astonishing, according to Rosemary Scales, Director of Music at LP, “The standard was unbelievable, with almost all of the students performing at around Grade 8/diploma level”. Among such strong competition, we were thrilled to hear the judges announce that both of our students had secured places in this category. Despite many competitors being in the Sixth Form, our two Year 11s, Alice and Taylor, rose to the challenge, demonstrating musicality and communication that truly shone. Their performances were not only technically impressive but emotionally resonant, earning Alice 1st place and Taylor 2nd.
The judging panel, led by Professors Susan Wollenberg and John Traill from Oxford University, spent additional time with Alice and Taylor, offering them valuable, personalised feedback.
We are incredibly proud of all our finalists, whose dedication and passion were on full display. The competition was an unforgettable experience, and we look forward to celebrating even more musical achievements in the future.
