The Drama department were pleased to celebrate success in both London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts (LAMBA) and Trinity exam boards with five talented students gaining Distinctions in grades 4-8.
Drama coach, Jak Ford-Lane who teaches students from Year 7 to the Upper Sixth through the co-curricular programme, was responsible for preparing the Leighton Park actors to learn multiple monologues which they had to deliver and answer questions about. Jak explained: “Drama brings the fundamental basics of humanity to everyone, but is integral to young people. Without drama, storytelling and the arts, we wouldn’t have the fundamental knowledge of all bases of civilisation. It builds the value of empathy for people in different circumstances for us. It establishes connection to humanity throughout history. These exams academically offer UCAS points, as well as building confidence through freedom of creativity and study of different styles of text.”
Immy (Upper Sixth) was enthusiastic about the experience saying: “I enjoyed the process of writing my own pieces and creating my own characters, which catered to my personality and acting. I think it broadened my abilities of not only acting but also writing. Jak is a brilliant teacher who lets you explore your passion and doesn’t just teach the course how it is. He is the perfect example of what a Drama teacher should be, with his own experiences of the industry, helping us to understand the raw essence of the art and to do our best and get the best results!”
Elouisa (Year 9) added, “The thing that I enjoyed the most was the experience and just acting in general for I loved that!”
India (Year 10) was equally keen to encourage others to try drama out: “I really enjoyed the process. I found it interesting to learn about my pieces and it gave me a better idea what they were about. We are so lucky to have such talent in the department. It’s great to be given these opportunities. I’m so proud of all we have achieved. The worst bit of my Drama exam was definitely waiting to find out my results. Although I was confident in my exam I was still super nervous for the outcome. The Drama teachers all pretended they had bad news for us, however they then told us we all achieved ‘Distinctions’! It was very relieving to hear that our hard work had paid off!”
Jak offers LAMDA lessons to any students interested through the co-curricular programme, one of our very few clubs out of the 90+ hobbies available with an additional cost. The Drama Department are responsible for an annual junior drama production through the co-curricular club, Quercus Theatre Company, and the senior drama production which alternates between a musical and a play each year. Any student is welcome to participate in these productions on or off stage as there are roles for stage crew, costumes and make up, set design etc as well as actors. Leighton Park values Drama as an essential component of our STEAM approach, marrying the creativity of the Arts with the logical thinking of STEM to build effective problem-solving and teamwork skills.
