Our annual Super Chefs competition is back! We were delighted to welcome last year’s winners, Thameside Primary, back to the Park for the very first baking session of 2023 on Thursday 19th January!
The twelve enthusiastic Year 5s were keen to get stuck in as Jennie, our Food Tech teacher, and Karen, her talented assistant, showed the junior chefs how to create delicious cupcakes. In addition to learning about weighing and measuring, beating and baking, Thameside pupils were given the chance to practise their icing skills with the unusual equipment of mashed potato in a piping bag! Students were able to draw patterns, follow lines and experiment with their control over the shapes they created prior to being let loose on the colourful icing and the pretty sprinkles!
The decorations were glorious and the group did a fabulous job creating amazing designs and scrumptious treats. The judges were Textiles teacher, Debbie Ince, and MFL specialist, Pablo Gorostidi Perez, who were pleased to share their comments on the beautiful results of everyone’s efforts.
Year 5 teacher, Ciara Finn, who accompanied the group commented “They have had an amazing day and been able to learn a new skill (piping). It was very successful.” Joshua agreed declaring “It was excellent supercalifragulisticgetsmealodosious!”. Jessica added “It was one of the best experiences in my life!”. Clearly feeling the same pressure as those under the watchful eye of Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry, Cora found the most challenging part of the day “was the last three minutes” although decided she “would change nothing” about the event. Barnaby, keen to share his experience fedback “I wish you were there! It was the best!”.
Barnaby and Cora who were declared the winners for their round were awarded points for sharing their roles and equipment well and keeping their area neat and tidy whilst working. The judges commented on their “magnificent piping and superb decorations demonstrating excellent icing control”. Daphne and Avyan picked up the Runners Up medals by following instructions well, working in a pair even though they would not normally do so and making cakes that our judges deemed “very creative and original, like a garden with beautiful colours and simplicity in their decoration.”
