Supporting Ukraine

“As the world looks on the terrible events in Ukraine, the Leighton Park community has been coming together to see how we can make a difference.” commented Senior Assistant Head: Partnerships and Co-Curricular, Natasha Coccia, as the School recently launched its appeal for donations to the British Red Cross. Natasha continued, “True to our values, especially of peace, and to instil in each student the spirit to be a change maker in the world today, we intend to show our support for those in need as a result of this conflict.”

Following a collection at the matinee performance of Guys and Dolls on Sunday 6th March, ably led by student charity group AMICUS, raising £350, a collection at Wednesday’s Scholars’ Concert raising £150, a mufti day and bacon butty /cake sale provided the finale for fundraising efforts the next week.

In Oakview, we’ve been pleased to see a strong appetite for fundraising through shoe shining! Assistant Head of Sixth Form, Richard Duckett, and a merry band of students have set up shop during breakfast each morning, to catch those with less than perfect footwear before the day starts for £2 per pair. “A lot of people are choosing to over-pay which is a lovely gesture.” commented Richard.

On the subject of footwear, in the Parent Staff Community, individuals have been collating shoeboxes through Year 10 mother, Alison Green. As children have been displaced from their homes and may hold few possessions, this small gesture hopes to bring light relief in the form of colouring books and cuddly teddies. From Leighton Park, the gifts will reach a hub in Twyford which is co-ordinating their onward transportation to Ukraine with donations from three other schools.

In Reckitt House, the girls took it upon themselves to get thrifty, selling their unwanted clothes to each other and refreshing their friends’ wardrobes. The idea came from Sophia in the Lower Sixth and was quickly backed by others. Deputy Housemistress, Julia Lutterloch, who was charmed by the House’s enthusiasm to raise money for Ukraine, commented “A brilliant initiative by the girls and a huge success! £195 is going to be added to the LP British Red Cross fund.”

More than £4,100 has been raised by Leighton Park for the British Red Cross who are channelling the national effort in support of the Humanitarian Crisis in Ukraine. This amount will be match funded by Microsoft through their employee giving program thanks to the support of Year 7 parent, Raluca Valeanu. “I’m a Business Programme Manager at Microsoft and I’m very excited to be at Leighton Park today selling cupcakes!” she commented. “It’s a great opportunity to do a profit match with Microsoft, whatever we sell here, the money that we collect will be matched by Microsoft so I’m very excited to help.”

“I would like to thank the Sixth Form Amicus group for their efforts in bringing these fundraising opportunities to our community.” reflected Natasha. Old Leightonian, Geraint Thomas also remarked “I’m not surprised by the wonderful amount raised. LP students have always been aware of the world situation and how they can contribute to alleviating distress.”
