Swindon Dance Deliver Dynamic Workshop

Swindon Dance Company have a stated aim of ‘enriching lives through Dance’ and their workshop for our Year 9 and 10 Dance students did just that on Thursday 19th May!

Directed by professional dance artist and workshop leader, George, the dancers had the opportunity to spend the morning in the Dance studio focussed on the creation of contemporary movement pieces inspired by command and response exchanges. The warm-up exercises tested co-ordination and suppleness, giving students some novel movement options in stretching their muscles prior to the main workshop.

Throughout the morning, the dancers stretched, spun, twisted, dropped, extended, balanced, turned, contracted, flexed and combined many more dynamic moves to deliver short pieces of performance which were presented in groups of two or three.

George explained, “Today is about innovation, being creative and exploring the space. We don’t have a plan for the morning so much as seeing where they take our suggestions and going with it; it’s about having fun!”

Leighton Park’s Dance Lead, Beth Butler, commented, “The experience with Swindon Dance is valuable for our students because it provides them with an insight into how the CATS (centre for advance training) works and the types of activities that take place on a typical day of training. Georg emphasised that the individual’s approach is just as important as their level of physical and expressive skill. It is about having an energy and a willingness to try new movement material and choreographic tasks.”

Olie (Year 9) reflected, “George was so engaging and will really help me in the future when working on my own pieces of choreography for GCSE dance.” Oscar (Year 9) added, “It was so fun to learn new ways of creating movement material through vocal cues.”
