Taking Animal Farm to the Stage

On Monday 10th October, the Year 10 cast of Animal Farm delivered a superb, intimate performance to family and friends in Leighton Park’s new Waterhouse Drama Studio.

Animal Farm tells the story of a group of animals who rebel against their human farmer, hoping to create a society where the animals can be equal, free, and happy. Ultimately, the rebellion is betrayed, and the farm ends up in a state as bad as it was before, under the dictatorship of a pig named Napoleon.

According to the satirical allegorical novella’s author, George Orwell, Animal Farm reflects on the events leading up to the Russian Revolution of 1917 and then on into the Stalinist era of the Soviet Union. The beast fable was first published in 1945.

“The students have done a wonderful job of creating this abridged version in a short space of time. This term we only had eight rehearsals before performing to an invited audience. We all felt we needed to bring it to performance soon as there is so much for these GCSE students in Years 10 and 11 to manage this term.” commented, Director and Head of Drama, Peter Scoggins.

He continued, “It was wonderful to see the actors meet the challenge of communicating the animal characters through voice and posture. A feature of our performance was the use of masks for both the human and animal characters and the young actors made great strides in a short time as they learnt how to use the masks to project their characters and respond to events in the play. Well done to all of them on a job well done! I am sure that we will be exploring the use of masks more in the future.”
