In Final Collect, on the last day of the Spring Term Isaac Walker, DofE and Outdoor Education Manager, announced “It’s been a busy term from a Duke of Edinburgh Award point of view with our record number of 44 students starting their DofE bronze journey.”
On the Park and across the country, His Royal Highness Prince Philip leaves a legacy in the form of the celebrated youth award, characterised by fond memories of exploration, adventure, service and challenge. At Leighton Park the Duke of Edinburgh is an important and enduring scheme that has helped numerous students and Old Leightonians to achieve with values, character & community.
In the 1960’s a group of students and teachers were honoured to receive royal approval of our very own glider from the Duke himself, on a visit to Lasham Airfield in Hampshire.
Archivist, John Allinson, fondly remarked “At this time we can be sure that our OL glider enthusiasts will be recalling HRH The Duke of Edinburgh’s visit to Lasham in the 1960s. Indeed, we all have cause to be grateful for the many ways in which the DofE programme has challenged and inspired so many Leightonians over the years.”
In 2021, Piers, Rupert and Willow in Years 9 and 10 have been awarded their Bronze Certificates of Achievement, whilst Daniel in the Upper Sixth has been applauded for completing his Gold Award.
Isaac reflected “The Duke of Edinburgh Award has provided hundreds of students from Leighton Park with the opportunity to give back to the local community, learn new skills and develop independence on expedition. Prince Phillip has left an amazing legacy, we will continue to use the DofE Award as a tool kit to inspire students for many years to come.”
