The Eye of the Beholder

March sees the spotlight shine on two of our talented Upper Sixth students, Nicole and Blaire.

The Art Department felt that their work complemented each other due to a shared subject matter of perceptions of beauty and its consequences.

While exploring notions of stretching and distortion, Nicole’s work references different standards of beauty across cultures. Her work looks back to ancient Chinese traditions and symbolism and compares them to the ideals seen today via social media.

Running parallel to Nicole’s work, Blaire inspects the fashion industry and asks, to what extent it is both ethical and sustainable? The paintings and imagery are there to shock and repulse, exposing the surface value of fashion and textiles as a second skin.

Both students have their eyes set on foundation courses in London, looking to further specialise into the worlds of art, graphics or fashion.

Commenting on the display, Head of Art, Mark Wood, said, “We hope that it amuses and provokes in equal measure and maybe helps us all feel beautiful in our own way. Please stop by and reflect on both yourself and the wonderful array of work on display.”
