Our A Level Drama students had an incredible opportunity to see ‘The Maids’ at Reading Rep Theatre this week, a co-production with Jermyn Street Theatre. This powerful production, directed by a female creative team and performed by an all-female cast, brought Genet’s intense and provocative play to life, exploring themes of power, identity, and role-play in a gripping and thought-provoking way.
The performance provided plenty of inspiration for our Drama student’s own practical and academic work, particularly in understanding character dynamic, theatrical style and semiotic. The trip was a fantastic evening of live theatre and learning!
‘The Maids’, inspired by the real murders committed by the Papin sisters, follows the story of ‘Two maids, Solange and Claire, are sisters with a secret. When their wealthy, glamorous madam is away, they fill their time roleplaying as mistress and maid in her lavish bedroom. However, their private ritual is not harmless fun. A shocking revelation soon turns their world into a deadly game of cat and mouse and the true intentions of their power play are unveiled’.
