The Politics of Social Justice

The Spring Term got off to a great start with an inspirational talk on Wednesday 11th January by the Chief Executive of the Centre of Social Justice (CSJ), Andy Cook. Speaking to Politics students, Academic scholars Amicus and Amnesty members Andy offered an insight into some of the significant social issues facing the country and explained how the work of the CSJ has changed governmental policy making in these areas. Andy also shared his own story and how his contribution to and leadership of the CSJ has impacted welfare reform, modern slavery, addiction strategy, school exclusion, debt policy and youth centre infrastructure. The CSJ has offices nationwide based in areas of high deprivation which they explain “enables them to support front line organisations and provide a bridge to national policymakers to learn from their experience.”

Sixth Former and Ethical Changermaking Scholar, Jaia, attended the talk and was enthusiastic about her experience, “I immensely enjoyed hearing Andy talk about how his work has led to such amazing changes. I particularly enjoyed hearing Andy discuss the politics and hard work involved with getting a policy or law passed in parliament and I was fascinated to hear Andy explain that if initially our ideas are ignored, we should not be discouraged and we should keep pushing to be heard because if we truly believe in our plans and ideas, we should prove to others that they should too.”

Jaia went on, “Andy’s talk helped me to understand that to make a big difference, all you need to start with is an idea. Andy’s talk reminded me how impactful our actions can be and how the smallest thought or idea can lead to something much greater.  I would hugely recommend attending or listening to one of Andy’s talks, the story of his upbringing and how he found himself in the position he is today working in government was so inspiring and extremely impactful.”
