World Book Day 2023!

Thursday 2nd March saw the celebration of World Book Day across the globe and Leighton Park was pleased to join in with the fun of reading for pleasure. Grace Ritchie, Librarian, organised a series of events throughout the day for our literary enthusiasts to share their favourite books and to inspire conversations about reading.

Tutor groups were asked to transform their classroom doors into a book cover with prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place! Where’s Wally was a popular choice, with three doors featuring the stripy lad, as was Roald Dahl, with both a dedicated Matilda door and a medley of his novels. The Geography department featured a colourful Jungle Book complete with 3D toy snake and in Peckover a wonderful recipe book even provided food to enhance their score! The Art Department had some extremely accomplished entries and in languages we spotted a sophisticated yet simple Twilight cover.  The judges were Sally Saunders, Michaela Kuhne, Peter Westhead and Matt Taylor and we are eagerly awaiting their considered verdict!

Students were emailed their £1.00 digital book tokens which can be used in book shops until Sunday 26th March for £1.00 off any book or exchanged for one of the World Book Day books, available in the Library until Friday 24th March. The titles include ‘Brilliant Brains’ by the hilarious Adam Kay, and ‘Being an Ally’ – all about using your power to stand up for others.

The Library is also the hub for the World Book Day Treasure Hunt where students searched for clues to find a hidden word. Sweet treats were awarded to everyone who took part.

For many a highlight was the themed lunch in Oakview restaurant, this year featuring a magnificent cake in the shape of Mr Bump!

Grace commented, “We’re so excited to celebrate World Book Day and all the good that reading can bring to our lives. The judges had a very difficult job on their hands choosing the door winners, they all looked incredible and all the students who took part should be very proud of their hard work! A special thanks to the Oakview team who continue to raise the bar every single year for their literary lunches!”
