World Book Day 2024

Leighton Park pulled out all the stops on Thursday 7th March for World Book Day 2024! The students were treated to a plethora of book-themed activities including a spectacular lunch by the amazing Oakview team, transformed into characters from ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ for the day! Violet Beauregard and Augustus Gloop were spotted in the servery under the enthusiastic command of Willy Wonka, not to mention a host of oompa loompas dancing behind the counters! The enormous golden ticket cake was a triumph, possibly the largest cake we’ve ever seen, and a popular dessert as students also tucked into lollipops amidst the colourful chocolate factory decorations!

The Library was another literary hotspot, as you might imagine, with games and activities available for students throughout the day. The notice boards provided an opportunity for everyone to nominate a memorable book in a range of categories from books that changed your life to those that made you laugh. Each student was given a £1 book token which they could either exchange for one of the World Book Day 2024 books or put towards a future book purchase. The national competition to design a book token was promoted and more locally the Library’s own competitions included a book quiz with prizes for all those who took part, a ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ treasure hunt, Pin the sock on Dobby, a Book Island Challenge, Match the teacher to their favourite book, Book character Guess Who? and so much more!

Grace Ritchie, Librarian, reflected, “We love celebrating World Book Day each year as it shines a spotlight on all the good that reading can do for us all, both in and out of school! Through reading we can learn about new places, people, concepts, ways of thinking. It inspires empathy in readers and helps us discover new things about ourselves as well, especially in this digital age.”

We are looking forward to sharing the entries to the Tutor Group World Book Day Challenge next week for the best recreation of a book cover; good luck everyone!
