Wowed by Whiteknights Studio Trail

The annual Whiteknights Studio Trail, now celebrating it’s 22nd year, is back and Leighton Park is venue number 9! We are delighted to host mixed media artist, Tom Cartmill, who also teaches English as an Additional Language at the school, together with sculptor Sadie Brockbank, the Kennet quilters and the drawings and paintings of Heather McAteer.

The trail is centred around the Whiteknights area and offers a interesting walk around an exhibition of creativity featuring 38 artists in 24 venues. The exhibition is open on both Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th June from 11.00am to 6.00pm and for anyone wishing to come along to Leighton Park, please park in Grove car park (sat nav RG2 7DE) and make your way to Peckover Hall.

At Leighton Park the Kennet Quilters will be displaying both traditional and contemporary pieces and also running an ongoing demonstration of quilting techniques to inspire visitors to take up the artform. One member of the group, Mary Parry, is a former Leighton Park Geography teacher and remembers in the 1980s teaching a class how to make a patchwork block when they were learning about early settlement on the North American prairies!

Tom Cartmill’s distinctive textured mixed media paintings and drawings combine traditional techniques with innovative processes. He uses building and familiar objects inspired by how they age, weather and transform with the passage of time as a source of constant inspiration.

Heather McAteer explores the themes of memory, history and identity, reconciling ideas of place and home in terms of longing and belonging through landscapes, often working in graphite.

Sadie Brockbank uses mixed media in her sculptures, working with bronze, ceramic, paper, fabric and stitch to reflect our relationship with the natural world with an emphasis on compassion and inter-dependence for all life-forms.

In support of the British Red Cross Ukraine Appeal each artist has donated a single 20 x 20cm piece for a special exhibition at venue 22, the Turret Gallery. These will be sold at the end of the weekend to raise funds for the appeal.
