On Thursday, 27th and 28th June, Year 10 experienced a range of careers based talks and activities to help them start thinking beyond GCSEs.
Thursday involved working with the Education Business Partnership (EBP) and business ambassadors from a wide range of companies such as Vodafone, Maven-Insights, David Perry Media, OpenText, Town Council, and the Ministry of Defence.
The aim of the day was for students to gather information on different roles, sectors, and training routes available. Students participated in various activities to encourage the development of skills commonly found lacking in candidates by employers. For instance, students were given a set of items and a brief to design and build a free-standing structure that could fit all their group members. This task required creative thinking, problem-solving, leadership, teamwork, and communication skills.
Year 10 students also had the opportunity to try out Sixth Form lessons for the day. They picked subjects they were interested in studying in the future, and teachers delivered sessions to give them an insight into what those lessons might look like in the Sixth Form at IB and A level. Allowing our pupils to think ahead about their future subjects helps ignite passions in possible career paths they may wish to follow. Doing so gives them a head start to consider their possibilities and discover the skill sets they need to build on to succeed.
They finished the day with a large game of rounders and the arrival of an ice cream van, capping off a very full few days in our vibrant learning community.
