Year 8 Adventures in Wales

The Year 8s packed their suitcases with clothes and courage for Activities Week (20th to 23rd June) as they headed to Haverfordwest on the Pembrokeshire Coastline for four days of incredible adventures!

Hosted by outdoor experience experts, TYF, who specialise in fun and friendly activities for all ages and abilities against the stunning backdrop of the Welsh countryside. With training and equipment all provided the group were in safe hands for their week away which included climbing, kayaking, surfing, coasteering, hill climbs and beach games. Plus a lot of very good food!

Chavelli, House Manager for Fryer, commented “It was fantastic, I absolutely loved it! I enjoyed coasteeringthe most – I was so scared, I don’t like the sea but it was amazing! The children loved the food. They also loved the idea that they are learning something completely new; surfing and coasteering were the best.”

Kylie (Year 8) reflected, “The pictures of coasteering on google are really different. It wasn’t just climbing you actually explore the coast. No one was forced to do anything you didn’t want to do, they did encourage you but they made you feel really safe. Surfing was really fun; there weren’t many big waves which was good! They made us feel really safe and happy. If you give it a try you will find out that it is really fun and you are hanging out iwht your friends which is even better.

Eva (Year 8) added, “We did watersports, climbing and walking. We also did a lot of swimming int eh coasteering and at the end is when we got to do most of the jumping. You wore helmets but you weren’t attached, it gave you more freedom. There were three heights of jump and you didn’t have to do the top one, you could do whichever you wanted. I think it was nice to be off timetable so close to the end of term, especially straight after exams, it helps to bring the energy back up for people and I made friends with people that I wasn’t talking to before the trip. Most people are apprehensive about the climbing and the water but I think you would always regret it if you didn’t try them at least once.”

Myles (Year 8) concluded, “We did lots of fun activities. I loved coasteering! The first time I felt quite nervous because I’d never done anything like this before but after the first jump I found it really fun. I was scared of climbing but then the instructors helped me and I did it and it was fun. The teachers were really, really good; they always made sure I was okay. I made so many new friends and my other friendships became better.”
