On Friday 14th June the MMC was lit up by insightful and impassioned expositions from our Year 8 students.
The Fryer Project Qualification (FPQ) is the culmination of the two-year ‘Approaches to Learning’ programme, a hallmark feature of teaching and learning here at Leighton Park. The interdisciplinary programme aims to foster a spirit of enquiry, build confidence and develop critical thinking and practical skills that will be useful to students as lifelong learners.
Emily in Year 8 noted: ‘I was very nervous before performing but once I started I was fine and felt good, I felt happy and proud of myself afterwards. I have really enjoyed learning about a new topic.” Chloe enjoyed the depth of the project: “I felt confident in front of my audience and enjoyed the questions I was asked, in the end. I never stopped being interested in my topic and enjoyed researching it in detail.”
Our Year 8 students impressed with their curiosity and originality, from choosing their research questions through to the tenacity and maturity with which they have tackled their independent research and presentations. For every student in Year 8 to write a dissertation of 1000 words on an original research question is a substantial achievement, and we would like to congratulate this year’s FPQ cohort on the success of their endeavours.
Tim, another Year 8 student, enthused: “I liked the research and I enjoyed all of the Fryer Project. I was terrified of the presentation beforehand but in the end it went really well. The set-up was amazing and it was great to hear everyone’s talks.”
The titles chosen by this year’s students resound with character and individuality; they also reflect the values and concerns that form the basis of the school’s learning. Some titles are political; many are concerned with sustainability and building a better future, whilst others still are purely theoretical, challenging existing preconceptions and questioning the status quo.
Special thanks to the teachers and librarians who have overseen the students’ work in Approaches to Learning and their FPQ projects.
