Inspired by Textiles teacher, Debbie Ince, the Year 9s have ditched their traditional secret santa present swap in favour of a reverse advent calendar. The students were able to consult a list of groceries needed by Reading’s local food bank and bring in items from home throughout December. The mountain of foodstuffs piled up in the office of Sally Saunders, Head of Year 9, and she was amazed by the haul of edible donations generously filling her cupboard before the goods were taken to Readifood on the last day of term.
Readifood is an independent food bank, affiliated to the Independent Food Aid Network, and run by Faith Christian Group. They have been providing emergency food parcels to 140 families in need each week across the greater Reading area for 25 years. They respond to referrals from local agencies and deliver directly to their clients, enabling them to assess a family’s needs in person during their visit.
A video was shared by Year 11s with the Year 9s highlighting the issues surrounding food poverty in our town and the positive difference the work of the Readifood charity is making to local residents.
“It is a great local charity within the school’s postcode and it is so important for the students to think of others and support those who may not be so lucky at this time of the year.” commented Sally, “ I’m really proud of the Year 9 and the Year 11 team who have made this possible.”
