The week of 3rd February 2025 is Children’s Mental Health Week and Leighton Park staff and students have been busy exploring different ways to promote good mental health.
Place2Be launched the first-ever Children’s Mental Health Week in 2015 to empower, equip and give a voice to every child in the UK. It has since become a well-recognised event, with thousands of participants.
Two of the stand-out recommendations from Place2Be in this year’s ‘Know Yourself, Grow Yourself’ campaign are reflection and journalling. Reflection is a central part of our school day from moments of silence during lunch to the weekly Meeting for Worship and the whole school community really values this time to be still and reflect on the world around us. The idea of journalling is something we have embraced with our flourishing Bullet Journalling (BuJo) Club which runs on a Monday after school and on a Tuesday lunchtime.
We have lots of support available to students in school starting with the small tutor groups and the close contact to our Wellbeing Room, the Sensory Room, school counsellors, our Health Centre team and even our own therapy dog, Sunny.
We have over twenty members of staff at school who are trained as Mental Health First Aiders. This is a rigorously assessed qualification which is retaken every three years. Qualified Mental Health First Aiders wear a purple lanyard to identify them to students and staff. We also have a trained group of student Wellbeing Ambassadors who provide peer-to-peer support to those in need.
Additionally, Leighton Park provides a subscription to The Wellbeing Hub run by Teen Tips for all Leighton Park parents and guardians, offering resources to support the parenting of teenagers.
